the kitchen floor dilemma

We have run into a slight dilemma on paint the kitchen wood floor plan. We knew we had a couple of layers of linoleum over some wood but what we didn't know was that someone installed plywood subfloor over the original linoleum and we think under 3 layers of linoleum and 70 years of glue their might be woodfloors under half and plywood under half.
Soo we have regrouped.
Rowan modeling the floors for you. In person they look so yellow, not white and never look clean. The scale of the checkers is so small too and makes the room feel cluttered.
I went to lowes and found these great 12x24 tiles for $2.5 a sq foot, such a great price! Can't decide which one I like better, you? Love the staggered tile look like these two below...and think the large tiles would look great staggered and make the room feel bigger.
But run them long ways to add length to the room... so you walk in like the picture below.
The plan is good but since we can't afford the tile right now and we are saving for it (renovation realities right?) what should I do in the meantime? I can't decide if I should just live with the linoleum for right now or try painting it? I found this tutorial and am thinking of trying it.
What do you think? Live with the linoleum until we can afford the tile or try to paint it?
